A TRIBUTE TO JACQUES BREL PART I: THE PURPOSE

*** It would be difficult to explain the need I felt to give a tribute to the late Jacques Brel. However, since I am putting this page on the web, I owe to those who will visit it some kind of explanation.... I grew up with the music and poetry of Brel as my guide in the strange world of "variety artist", and I admit that many of my first songs reflected my admiration for Jacques Brel, so much that in some of my early performances people would say "Great song...Brel!!!" Not because the song was a carbon copy but more because of the construction and the interpretation. Even though I am an unconditional admirer of Jacques Brel, I would never pretend to explain the work of Jacques. No one, I believe,. can really explain the work of an artist but the artist himself. ** Yes, I can give you my interpretation of his songs, but that does not mean that Brel felt the same way when writing or singing his songs. Therefore, the purpose of my tribute to Jacques Brel is to show the rest of the world what an individual, struggling musician at the other end of the world, felt when one of the greatest contemporary popular poets died on October 9th 1978.
